A Mother’s Day Gift Guide

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavour by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts”  –  Washington Irving.

My mum is my best friend. We’ve been through so much together over the years and there isn’t a single person in the world who means more to me than my mum does; she’s my rock. I honestly don’t know what I would do without her.

I think mum’s are absolutely amazing, and I think part of my reasoning for that opinion is because I don’t want to be a mum. I don’t have the maternal instincts other people my age seem to; I find being around kids an absolute nightmare. Babies and toddlers I love, but once they hit about 4 I just can’t cope with them. And when I think of how much you have to give up in order to bring up kids it puts me right off; maybe I’m just selfish. But that just makes me admire mums so much more, and makes me appreciate mine to no end. Those women who give up their time and put their own lives/dreams/careers/wants on hold for their kids. Those women who give up their last biscuit because their kid wants it, who don’t buy themselves a new pair of cute jeans because their kid wants some football boots, who don’t go on that girls weekend away because their kid has a dance show. Good mum’s are the most selfless people out there and I just have so much respect for them. Hats off to you!

Mother’s Day is coming up this month (Sunday 26th March!) and, whilst spreading the love shouldn’t be reserved for a single day a year, I plan on making sure my mum knows how much she means to me. So I thought I’d share with you some ideas of things you can get/do/send your mum to show her your love and appreciation this year. Whether you’re looking for something lavish or some cheap and cheerful, there’s a few options for everyone…

Something to treat herself

I don’t know about your mum, but mine LOVES those times when she can just grab a few minutes to herself and relax. Whether that’s five minutes to have a brew in peace, without my little brother bending her ear about the colouring pen he just dropped under the sofa, or a rare soak in the bath. From what I hear those treasured peaceful minutes are like gold dust to mums, so why not give her something that can make those rare moments that bit better?

Frank Body
Frank Body is an Aussie owned and made skincare company who focus on coffee-based products which “wake up” your skin and help to smooth lumps and bumps. Their website gives you all info on the theory behind the product which is that coffee is a natural exfoliator so, as their products contain this key ingredient, they will leave your body feeling smooth and supple. Coffee also has the same PH as our skin and so it won’t change it’s natural make up by drying it out or making it oily. And with only natural ingredients being used, including coconut oil, mint and cinnamon (depending on what your skin needs), you don’t need to worry about any of those horrible added elements like parabens or sulphates! I don’t know a women in the world who doesn’t love a good pamper session and Frank Body offer a variety of products ranging from body scrubs to moisturisers – there’s really something for everyone! They even have a range of kits which are perfectly made up for gifts.

Let’s get personal

Personalised items are always that little bit extra special to me; they’re unique and show that you’ve put a lot of thought and effort in to the gift. There are an abundance of companies out there making quality personalised items that are truly fab, so here are a few of my favourites.

Not On The High Street
I’m sure you’ve all used or at least heard of this website before, it’s a mecca of cute gifts, homeware items and had an abundance of things that can be personalised. A few year’s ago I got my mum an “Our Memories Together…” print on which I got to provide up to 20 memories that made me smile – my mum has it on her living room wall now and every time I visit and read it it still makes me laugh! The other fab thing about Not On The High Street is it’s made up of small businesses, so when you buy from here you’re supporting smaller companies which is always something I advocate for.

They also work a lot with walnut wood and slate which are hot trends right now. Instagram Small Businesses
As I mentioned earlier I’m a huge advocate for supporting small businesses because I love the thought of my money going to genuine people rather than large corporations where the real people behind the products tend to reap the least rewards for their work. When you buy from a small business you’re helping people to pay for their kids drama classes or pay towards the wedding of their dreams; and this comes with such a great feeling. Not only that but the quality and service is fantastic because the people who run small businesses put their all in to it, it matters to them; their name is on that work and they take so much more pride in the things they produce because of that fact. Here are a few of my favourite small businesses that I have come across on Instagram, all of which I have bought from myself. They include “Handcrafted by Charlie” who designs wooden signs, “Names in Frames” who creates 3D frames, “Tilly and Sage” who makes gorgeous decorated household items, “Prints for your Home”, “Sweet Pea Press” and “Alice’s Accessories” who design personalised prints etc.  All of these companies offer options of pre-designed products that can be personalised or custom-made designs that you can work with them to create. Also in this section is my all time favourite homeware shop, “West Barn Interiors” who just has the dreamiest collection of things it’s unreal including custom fabric footstools!!

A bit of bling

Let’s be honest, what woman doesn’t like a bit of bling…am I right?! Jewellery is a lovely keep sake gift which your mum will be able to treasure forever and wear to remind her how much you mean to her.

Fiyah Jewellery
Fiyah say they’re inspired by nature, mysticism, music, sophisticated street style and the desire to spread positivity. Their pieces are designed to embody strength, confidence and elegance. They make some truly beautiful items, several of which I’ve managed to add to my jewellery box over the last year – I just can’t help myself! A recent addition to their collection, and something that I feel is perfect for a really meaningful Mother’s Day gift, is their Alchemy collection; specifically the Earth symbol pendant.

“Alchemy is the art and science by which the chemical philosophers of medieval times attempted to transmute the baser metals into gold and silver. Alchemical Earth is the symbol of life. All life. The other elements (water, air and fire) are life forces too, but Earth is the accommodator: Earth accommodates other elements. She allows great swaths to be sliced from her body as she yields to the waters of our world. She communicates with the air and without the Earth; air would be a lost and sorrowful daughter. Fire lives in the belly of Earth, and could not consummate without the foundational spark originating from Earth-based matter. Within these contemplative contexts, we sense all threads of life are first woven with the fibre of Earth. Furthermore, this interconnectedness reminds us not only is the Earth a stabilizing and a wholly physical symbol, it also represents a network.  Earth is synonymous with belonging. She represents community and tribal wisdom. Earth is the embodiment of the concept of HOME”

I mean does that not make you think of a mother? The Earth symbol, the symbol of life, just makes me think of a mum; the person who gives life. The first image and link below is for the Earth symbol pendant whilst the rest are other gorgeous items which would make lovely gifts.

Spend some time together

Afternoon Tea
The fantastic thing about Afternoon Tea is that you have so many options with it; anything from a really fancy hotel to putting it together yourself at home. Either way you can have some tea, some yummy food and some quality time together. I love Afternoon Tea because essentially it’s the same as grabbing a coffee and a catch up but just a little fancier.

A trip to the spa
There’s nothing better than a pampering from a professional! Whether your preference is a sensual massage or a relaxing pedicure, a trip to the spa has something for everyone. Most spas also offer fantastic facilities to enjoy pre/post treatment such as jacuzzis, pools, saunas, steam rooms and lunch facilities. A lot of spas also offer Afternoon Tea which is just an excuse to double up on the fun! Below are a selection of the most exquisite spas in the Manchester area, but if you’re based further afield then it’s usually pretty easy to find a good spa through the power of Google. Plus, Groupon often has some amazing deals where you can get spa access and a treatment of your choice for a fixed low price – always worth a look!
